A sharp fishing hook is essential when fishing. If the hook can scratch your fingernail lightly when you drag it across, then it is sharp enough. If not, you should replace the hook or sharpen it for best results.

From one season to the next, fish follow varying migration patterns. Remember this as you decide to cast your line uphill or downhill. Casting uphill in the spring will get you more bites. In the fall, the fish will be moving in the other direction, and thus you should fish downhill.
Bass can be caught with grubs. These lures, although small in size, will help you in your efforts to catch big fish. They have been proven to work when fishing for smallmouth bass, but largemouth mass enjoy them as well. They work particularly effectively when fishing in reservoirs.
Catching a fish does not mean that you have to keep it. For example, small fish should be released, and catching a lot of fish means you should put some back, as well. If you will control how many fish you take out of a lake it can help ensure fish will be around for future seasons.
When planning for a fishing trip, never forget to take along a sharp knife. This equipment is very important and you’ll have lots of problems if you do not have it. Remember to have a fishing knife that is of high quality, sharp and rust resistant.
Examine your hooks to make sure they do not have defects and are in quality condition. Even if you’re doing everything else right, a dull hook will make catching fish extraordinarily difficult. You should bring replacement hooks along with you when you go fishing, or learn how to sharpen them on the fly. Having a sharp hook to fish with definitely makes fishing easier.
It’s important to be aware how the moon phase will affect the fish you’re trying to catch. A full moon is often a good time to go fishing, while moonless nights are not recommended. You will also be more visible to the fish, so be prepared.
When you go fishing, remember to bring a net. After reeling in your fish, they are sometimes very active and flop around, which makes them hard to handle without a net. This will lower your risk of losing the fish as it struggles to return to the water.
If you learn a few easy knots, you will be helped a great deal. A well tied knot will keep your hook tightly attached to the line when you catch a fish. It will also make it easier for you to switch equipment. You should be able to quickly and easily tie knots or change equipment once you practice tying knots.
Pay attention to the water. Learn where the fish are generally located, especially if you fish in the same area each time you fish. Learn what time they seem to be most active during. Bass fishing requires perfect timing.
When using a net to retrieve your fish, be sure the fish enters the net head-first. Fish will thrash less if they are netted this way, and the process will do less damage to their fins and bodies. Cradle the net using both hands, as this reduces the chance that a fighting fish will make it back into the water.
A lot of fishers use a device known as a depth finder. A depth finder, or fish finder, allows anglers to both see how deep the water is as well as allows the angler to determine how deep they should fish depending on the water temperature.
